Kiwanis
International is an organization of local clubs of business, professional
and retired men and women who are interested in community service
with emphasis on children and youth programs.
How
Kiwanis Began
Kiwanis
was founded in Detroit, Michigan in 1915. It replaced an organization
established the year before to promote the exchange of business
among its members. In contrast to its predecessor, the purpose
of Kiwanis is to serve the community. The organization grew rapidly. In
1916 it spread to Canada with the formation of a club in Hamilton,
Ontario. Districts soon were established, and in 1920 the
Western Iowa District was formed. In 1922 its name was changed
to Nebraska-Iowa District. The name Kiwanis is said to come from
an American Indian term meaning "We make ourselves known". The
club motto is "We Build".
History
of Des Moines Golden K Kiwanis Club
Our
clubs aim is to provide fellowship and service opportunities for
retirees. There were forty one charter members present when
we received our Charter on August 10, 1984. We were sponsored
by the Des Moines Downtown Club. Since its inception, Des
Moines Golden K has enjoyed a steady growth of membership and service. We
now have a membership of 170 members; it is now the largest and
one of the fastest growing clubs in the NE/IA District. We
have fun. Please see our Project page; This is what
we are about and demonstrate our motto - "WE BUILD"
